Baseball Defeats Maryland Eastern Shore for Third Straight Win

PHILADELPHIA – Eight different Explorers registered a hit, as the La Salle University baseball team earned its third consecutive victory, 6-1, over Maryland Eastern Shore from Hank DeVincent Field on Tuesday.

Sophomore Dylan Evans went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a run, an RBI and a walk to pace the Explorers. Classmate Niko Jenkins struck out five and gave up only one hit over four shutout innings in his first career start on the mound.

La Salle (14-25) opened up the scoring in the first inning when freshman Tommy Toal scored on an RBI groundout by senior Brian Dudeck. The Explorers made it 2-0 in the fourth, as Evans hit a deep double off the left field wall and then came in to score on an RBI double by sophomore Ryan Guckin.

Redshirt sophomore Matt Patricio took over for Jenkins in the fifth inning, and the Hawks cut the deficit to one on an RBI single by Jessey Valdez. But Patricio got out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Explorers in front.

In the bottom half of the inning, Toal made it a 3-1 game with an RBI single to right that scored senior Austin Constantini. Junior Peyton Sorrels then hit an RBI single in the sixth, scoring freshman Jack Cucinotta for a three-run advantage.

The Explorers added two more runs in the seventh behind three hits. Junior Ben Faso led off the inning with a blast that easily cleared the left field fence for his third home run of the season. Evans later delivered a two-out RBI single to bring home Dudeck to make it 6-1.

Faso and Toal joined Evans with multi-hit games, each recording two hits apiece. Patricio earned the first win of his career after giving up just one run on six hits with a strikeout over three innings. Freshman Colin Scanlon pitched the final two innings and gave up no hits to cap off the victory.

La Salle will visit Georgetown on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. contest with the Hoyas.
