PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team (12-28, 3-13 A-10) lost both games of a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's (20-22, 7-10 A-10) on Thursday afternoon at the SJU Softball Complex.
Game 1: Saint Joseph's 9, La Salle 8
The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the 7
th inning on the way to a 9-8 walk-off win in the opening game. Down to their final three outs and trailing by a run, Saint Joseph's tied the game on a Molly Kapala sacrifice fly and capitalized on a La Salle fielding error to score the game-winning run.
Morgan Orlowski (L, 1-3) fell victim to a pair of La Salle fielding errors in the 7
th that allowed the two unearned runs to score for Saint Joseph's.
The Explorers had scored two runs in the top of the 7
th to take an 8-7 lead after
Marissa Ewald scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and
Angelina Refice plated the go-ahead run with an RBI single.
In a game that saw the lead change hands eight times, La Salle went ahead for the first time with a four-run 3
rd inning.
Deanna Pineiro led off with her second homer of the season, and Refice scored on a failed pick-off attempt after singling.
Emily Conaway then followed with an RBI double and
Ashley Mendenhall capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Conaway's double was her 13
th of the season, and tied her with Amanda Clark (2001) for most doubles in a season.
The Explorers scored two more runs in the 4
th on a Conaway RBI single and an Ewald sacrifice fly.
Game 2: Saint Joseph's 6, La Salle 0
Marlo Roadcap (L, 3-13) took the loss in game two, allowing five runs over 4.1 innings. Chelsea Evans (W, 4-2) didn't allow a hit in the complete-game shutout for the Hawks, striking out five while walking three.
Saint Joseph's scored on a wild pitch in the 1
st and Sarah Ostaszewski drove in a pair with a single in the 2
nd. The Hawks scored two more in the 5
th and an insurance run in the 6
th.
