RICHMOND, Va. – The La Salle University baseball team recorded 13 hits, but it wasn't enough, as the Explorers fell at Richmond, 13-6, in Atlantic 10 action on Friday.
It was the 24th time this season that the Explorers' offense posted double-digit hits, but the Spiders worked 16 hits of their own, and a seven-run second inning proved to be the difference in the game.
Eight different Explorers had a hit in the game, and all nine starters reached base. Junior
Ben Faso led the way, going 3-for-5 with two doubles, a run and an RBI.
With the two doubles, Faso moved into a tie for ninth on the program's single season doubles list.
La Salle opened up the scoring by taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as sophomore
Dylan Evans drove home senior
Brian Dudeck on an RBI double to left field.
However, Richmond scored seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the second and added another on a home run by Daniel Brumbaugh to take a seven-run lead in the third.
Evans helped the Explorers chip away at the lead by scoring the next two runs. In the fourth inning, he came in to score on an RBI double by senior
Yan Carlo Rivera. Evans then scored again in the sixth when Rivera reached on an error, making it a five-run difference at 8-3.
Richmond tallied four more runs in the bottom of the sixth, though, to take a commanding 12-3 lead.
In the seventh, sophomore
Ryan Guckin doubled to right center, driving in Faso to make it 12-4. After Richmond added another run in the bottom of the frame, La Salle scored twice in the ninth inning. Senior
Austin Constantini scored on an RBI groundout by Faso, and Guckin capped off the scoring with a double down the left field line to score junior
Peyton Sorrels.
Evans was 2-for-5 with two runs, two doubles and an RBI. Guckin also went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two doubles, while Dudeck had a two-hit day at the plate as well. Sophomore
Jackson Ray drew the loss on the mound for the Explorers.
The two squads will meet again on Saturday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
