WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore
Anthony Hawthorne of the La Salle University men's track team punched his ticket to the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in the 800-meter run after winning the event at the West Point Twilight Meet Thursday night.
Hawthorne's winning time of 1:47.77 in the 800 was not only a personal best, but it was also the 14th fastest time in the nation thus far this season. Hawthorne qualifies for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, which will take place in Tampa, Fla., from May 24-26. First round 800-meter action will begin on Thursday, May 24.
Nick Smart and
Nathan Gillis also competed in the 800 meters on Thursday. Smart won his heat and also posted a personal best time, as he finished seventh overall out of 25 runners with a time of 1:50.32. Meanwhile, Gillis ran in 1:56.54 to finish in 20th.
The Explorers will look to make even more noise this weekend when they head to the IC4A Championships.
