PHILADELPHIA - A total of three crews from the La Salle University rowing teams had impressive time trials and advanced to semifinal rounds on day one of the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday. The 80th annual event pits teams from across the country over two days on the Schuylkill River.

The men's freshman four was the first crew to hit the water and finished its time trial in 6:41.35, which was the seventh-fastest in the 29-team field. The Explorers closed in a quicker time than groups from Maryland, Georgia Tech and Michigan.

Another set of newcomers was next, as the freshman eight cruised through its trial in a time of 5:48.98. The impressive finish ranked fourth out of 25 boats, and topped times by teams from Drexel, Purdue, Minnesota, Alabama and Virginia. The only three crews that had better times were Temple, Delaware and Michigan.

Both of the freshmen boats competed in semifinal rounds and finished fourth in their races. The four-plus boat was edged by less than half a second by a team from Michigan for third place, while the eight boat narrowly missed out on third by just over five-tenths of a second behind Bucknell.

A third La Salle boat was able to advance to the semifinal round after trials, as the women's collegiate junior varsity four rowed the course in 7:27.39 to close in sixth place out of 21 teams. The women had the top performance of any La Salle boat in the semifinals, closing in third place in its heat. 

Rounding out the Explorer contingent were two heavyweight eight boats. The first varsity group finished its race in 5:46.22 while the junior varsity eight crossed in 6:09.84.

La Salle will take part in five races on the second and final day of the Dad Vail Regatta, which will be held on Saturday, May 12 at the Schuylkill River. Racing for the Explorers will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the freshman four second final.
