HAMILTON, N.Y. – The La Salle University women's soccer team (4-1-0) scored two unanswered goals to defeat Colgate (1-2-1), 2-1, in overtime Thursday night. Redshirt-senior
Madison Bower scored the game winner on a corner kick from sophomore
Jenna Soriano, after freshman
Camaren Cox tied things up in the second half.
COACH SAYS:
- "It was a much needed come from behind win," said head coach Paul Royal. "I thought our defense was outstanding tonight. A lot of credit goes to Colgate's style of play - their movement and creativity in the final half really put us on our back foot, but our girls were able to weather the storm. In the end they showed a tremendous amount of courage and resilience in fighting their way back into the game. It was great for Camaren Cox and Madison Bower to be rewarded for their hard work. I also thought that both Molly O'Brien and Clarissa Kirsch-Downs were excellent on both sides of the ball."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After falling behind 1-0 in during the 64thminute, the Explorers responded in the 77thminute as Cox took a rebound opportunity and drilled the ball into the back of the net from eight yards out. The score tied the game at one, forcing overtime.
- Seven minutes into overtime, Bower sat in the box awaiting a corner kick from Soriano. The kick was aired into position, allowing Bower to head the ball past the keeper to seal the game for La Salle.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bower's goal marks her fourth on the season, while Soriano's assist is her third.
- Cox's score is the second on her freshman campaign.
- Sophomore keeper Claudia Jenkins made five saves, allowing the lone goal.
UP NEXT:
The Explorers will enjoy a long break from game action, not playing again until Sunday, September 9 against Rutgers. La Salle will be seeking revenge, as this will be a rematch from the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
