PHILADELPHIA – After earning a share of the Philadelphia Soccer Six title last season, the La Salle University men's soccer team will begin its quest for a repeat when the Explorers battle rival Villanova on the road on Wednesday. The game will begin at 4 p.m. from the Higgins Soccer Complex.
SOCCER SIX SEASON BEGINS
- The Explorers defeated Penn and Drexel in their two Soccer Six matches last year and were crowned Co-Champions along with Villanova, both with 2-0-0 records.
- This season, La Salle's Soccer Six schedule features Wednesday's tilt at Villanova and a matchup at Saint Joseph's on Oct. 3.
LAST TIME OUT
- La Salle was clipped on the road by Robert Morris, 1-0, on Saturday.
- Freshman goalkeeper Brett Werner made four saves and gave up just one goal in his collegiate debut.
- Junior Pat McCarthy recorded three shots in the first half, including two on goal.
- Earlier in the week, La Salle dropped a 2-0 decision at Lafayette.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
- Villanova is receiving votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches' National Poll and is ranked seventh in the East Region Poll.
- The Wildcats were ranked 13th in the nation last week before falling at Marquette, 3-0, in their Big East opener on Saturday.
- Villanova sits at 4-2-0 overall and is 3-0-0 at home, with wins over Delaware, William & Mary, Loyola (Md.) and Penn State.
- Zach Zandi leads the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists, including two game-winning goals, while Yusuf Cueceoglu has two goals and Enda O'Neill has two assists.
- Goalkeeper Carson Williams has a 1.30 goals against average and a .784 save percentage with two shutouts in net.
