Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bower Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Davidson in OT; Win A-10 Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Just 49 seconds into the second overtime period, redshirt-senior Madison Bower drove a header into the upper right corner to win the game for the La Salle University women's soccer team (6-1-1, 1-0) as it took down Davidson (2-6-0, 0-1).

COACH SAYS:
  • "A lot of credit goes to the Davidson squad and coaching staff," said head coach Paul Royal. "They gave us all we could handle, but in the end it's great to have one of college soccer's best goal scorers in Madi."
  • "We were very sloppy on the ball and didn't quite execute a lot of the things we wanted. However, it shows a lot of poise, belief and grit in this team that we can play below our expectation and still pull out a win. We'll have to play significantly better if we're going to compete with probably the most talented SJU team I've seen."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams battled in regulation, forcing the game into overtime.
  • During the 100th minute, the Explorers had a chance when freshman Camaren Cox took a header, off of a corner kick, that was blocked.
  • Junior Jess Shanahan sent a pass into the box during the 101st minute of the game, that found Bower's head for the game-winner.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Entering the game against Davidson, Bower sat third in the nation for game-winning goals. With the game winner over the Wildcats, Bower moves into a tie for first place with Bri Folds of Auburn and Raimee Sherle of Boise St with five game-winning goals.
  • La Salle led Davidson in shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (7-1).
  • Sophomore keeper Claudia Jenkins made two saves in her fourth shutout of the season.
  • Shanahan's assist was her third on the year.
UP NEXT:
The Explorers return home to take on crosstown rival, Saint Joseph's, on Sunday. First touch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McCarthy Stadium.
