Field Hockey Defeats LIU Brooklyn, 9-1, in Impressive Team Effort

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The La Salle University field hockey team defeated LIU Brooklyn by a 9-1 margin on Sunday afternoon. The Explorers scored seven times in the second half to run away from the Blackbirds, who took an early 1-0 lead. Junior Mackenzie Karcher registered a hat trick with three goals and also had a pair of assists in the win that improved La Salle's record to 5-6 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LIU scored the first goal of the game midway through the first period, forcing La Salle to call a timeout and regroup. To that point, the Explorers had a 9-1 edge in shots but had not been able to convert.
  • Junior Lauren Lechleitner evened out the score, 1-1, finding the cage off of an assist from senior Logan Oh at 19:33 to kick off the nine-goal run for La Salle.
  • Karcher provided sophomore Rialee Allen with an assist to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead over the Blackbirds.
  • The second half saw the Explorers rack up seven more goals, with Karcher starting things off less than two minutes into the period.
  • Karcher had three goals in the frame, and also assisted on another goal by Allen.
  • Logan Oh, junior Amanda Chapin, and freshman Shannon O'Reilly also scored for La Salle.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle outnumbered LIU in shots, 28-4, and penalty corners, 17-2.
  • Logan Oh registered a team-high seven shots including six that were on goal.
  • Chapin also had a pair of assists on the day, as did senior defender Megan Kida.

  • The Explorers will challenge Holy Cross next week in the Philadelphia Classic. The event will take place at Saint Joseph's University on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 3:00 p.m.
