Men's Swimming and Diving | January 14, 2019
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The La Salle University men's and women's swimming and diving teams begin the second half of their season with two local contests this week. On Wednesday, they travel to the suburbs of Philadelphia to face Villanova in a dual meet--diving will begin at 4:20 p.m., with swimming to follow directly after. Then, they return to Kirk Pool and host A-10 rivals Fordham for a Saturday morning matinee starting at 11 a.m.
ABOUT THE EXPLORERS
- In single-opponent competition last semester, men's swimming and diving went 1-2 with a lone victory against Drexel. The women's team finished at 0-4.
- Freshman Zachary Wolbert stood out among men's swimmers, recording eleven individual victories, including two meets with three wins. Wolbert was named A-10 Rookie of the Week (11/4) after impressing in the A-10 Classic; he recorded victories in the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 Free.
- Junior Marcus Forsgren also had a strong first semester, earning La Salle's lone win at the Bucknell Invitational in the 100 Freestyle.
- Men's diving duo of Blake Griffith and Steven Stasolla placed 1-2 on three different occasions (two of three days during Bucknell Invitational and once vs Lehigh). Overall, Griffith recorded three individual wins and Stasolla finished with two last semester.
- The 400 Free relay was a strength for the men's team, as the Explorers were victorious on three different occasions--in a tri-meet vs Delaware and Rider, vs Drexel, and in the A-10 Classic.
- Women's swimming was headlined by freshman Sara Rizzetto (six individual wins) and junior Carrie Horan (five individual wins).
- Freshman Phoebe Shaya impressed on the women's diving team with six individual victories, including two meets with multiple finishes atop the podium.
SCOUTING VILLANOVA
- Women's swimming and diving were 3-0 in single-opponent competition, split a tri-meet with a win vs Rutgers and a loss vs Princeton, while finishing third overall in the Brown Invitational.
- Men's swimming and diving were 1-3 in single-opponent competition, and finished fifth overall in the Brown Invitational.
- Women's swimming had three girls exceed five individual wins last semester: senior Darby Goodwin (eight), freshman Nicole Welch (seven), and senior Taylor Wilson (six). The men were led by junior Stephen Krecsmar (six wins) and junior Justin Cucchi (five wins).
SCOUTING FORDHAM
- Women's swimming and diving were undefeated in single-opponent competition, finishing the first semester with a 4-0 record. They placed second in the Bucknell Invitational.
- Men's swimming and diving were 2-2 in single-opponent competition, and finished last in the Bucknell Invitational.
- Upperclassmen Tara Brunner and Milly Furneaux led women's swimming with four individual wins each, while junior Christopher Sleutjes led the men's team with three wins.
