Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss at UMass, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Amanda Chapin registered her fourth goal of the season in the 57th minute as the La Salle University field hockey team fought back to force overtime with Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 action on Friday afternoon. The Minutewomen, however, received a goal from Bella Ianni less than a minute into the extra session to hand the Explorers a tough 2-1 defeat. The loss eliminates La Salle from contention for an A-10 Tournament berth, and moves UMass to 5-2 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams battled to a scoreless deadlock after the first 30 minutes of action, with the sides combining for just two penalty corners and 10 shots.
  • UMass held a 7-3 edge in shots through two quarters, with two of La Salle's three attempts coming from Chapin.
  • In the third stanza, Lucy Cooper gave the home team a 1-0 lead with her sixth goal of the season which came off the deflection of an initial shot that was saved by La Salle's Cassie Kincaid.
  • The Explorers had an opportunity to equalize late in the period but Chapin had her attempt off a penalty corner blocked.
  • La Salle nearly tied the game early in the fourth, as senior Lauren Lechleitner had two shots at the cage stopped by UMass goalie Marlise van Tonder.
  • The visitors continued to put pressure on and, with time running down, finally broke through when Chapin converted off a turnover by the Minutewomen.
  • Another penalty corner from senior Chloe Lucky produced a shot at the go-ahead goal, but Chapin again had a chance blocked.
  • Momentum was short-lived for the Explorers, as UMass came out and scored the game-winning tally just 58 seconds into overtime.
