Men's Soccer Comes up Short against UMass on Senior Night, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University men's soccer team honored its four seniors and then entered halftime all tied up, but Massachusetts knocked off the Explorers Saturday night, 3-2, on Senior Night from McCarthy Stadium. La Salle recognized seniors Pat McCarthy, Brandon Gutekunst, Daniel Begovic and Billy McCarthy prior to the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quinn Serafino put the Minutemen up 1-0 early with an open-net goal in the sixth minute.
  • Sophomore Ike Hollinger evened the score in the 41st minute homer, gathering a loose ball in front of the UMass keeper and knocking it in to make it one apiece.
  • The Minutemen drew a foul inside the box in the 54th minute though, with Chrsitian Labeck easily converting the penalty kick goal.
  • Labeck later pushed the UMass advantage to 3-1 with a 68th minute tally.
  • La Salle got back into it in the 78th minute when sophomore Nigel Buckley fired his fourth goal of the year into the right side of the net to make it 3-2.
  • The Explorers maintained possession often and had numerous chances down the stretch but couldn't capitalize.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle suffered defeat despite holding significant edges in shots and corner kicks. The Explorer defense limited UMass to just two shots in the second half.
  • Buckley piled on five shots, while sophomore Omari Cotterell took three. Sophomore Brett Werner made four saves in goal.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will conclude the regular season next Saturday at St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m.
