Swimming & Diving Begins Its 2019-20 Season with Early-October Start

Swimming and Diving Team

Men's Swimming and Diving | October 3, 2019

PHILADELPHIA – Swimming & diving begins its season at the New England Catholic Invite on Friday. With it, a renewed run at the A-10 Championships and plenty of individual times to chase.  In a strategy to push times across the pool, the Explorers have expanded their total squad from 33 to 43 and appear ready for the season—one which is starting a few weeks earlier than normal.

ABOUT THE EXPLORERS
  • The 2018-19 campaign saw plenty of school records fall—a total of nine new marks.
  • Headlining that group were senior Marcus Forsgren and sophomore Zachary Wolbert. The pair combined for five individual records; the Swede was also part of two new relay records set.
  • Forsgren picked up a gold and bronze medal at the A-10 Championships. His first-place finish broke the school's 100 Breast record, while his 50 Free time took third—although his time in the prelims was faster and set a La Salle mark. He was also part of the 200 Free Relay that took bronze and set a school record.
  • Wolbert was named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer of the A-10 Championships and for good reason. His 200 Fly time of 1:48.86 set a new conference and school record, winning gold. A 400 IM second-place finish was good enough to break an Explorers' mark from 1986. He also picked up bronze medals in three relay races.
  • Sophomore Sara Rizzetto recorded a 10th place finish in the 200 IM, notable for her time of 2:03.55, which wrote her name into the La Salle record book.
  • On the boards, sophomores Steven Stasolla and Phoebe Shaya both took bronze for their respective dives in the 1-meter event.
  • At the end of the Championships, the men's team finished fifth and the women seventh. As far as projections for this season go, the conference released its polls with the men checking in at third and the women seventh.
ABOUT THE NEW ENGLAND CATHOLIC INVITE
  • Seven schools will be competing at the Margot Connell Rec Center over Friday and Saturday. La Salle and host Boston College are joined by Assumption, Holy Cross, Fairfield, Providence and Mount St. Mary's. Friday's action begin at 6 p.m., while Saturday is an all-day meet.
