PHILADELPHIA - Youth was served at Hank DeVincent Field on Friday afternoon, as four La Salle University field hockey freshmen found the back of the cage in a 5-2 win over Atlantic 10 foe Saint Louis. First-year players
Beau Bakker,
Samie Hackman,
Kelsey Jones and
Hannah Yanovich all scored goals for the Explorers, who improved to 2-0 in league play for the first time in over a decade.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Things started out inauspiciously for the Explorers (5-5, 2-0 A-10), who found themselves in a 1-0 hole after SLU scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute.
- La Salle responded with the equalizer nearly five minutes later, as Yanovich finished off a feed from senior Amanda Chapin.
- Chapin again played the role of facilitator in the 17th minute, when she found Bakker directly off a penalty corner to give the home side a lead it would not relinquish.Â
- The second quarter was a dominant one for the Explorers, who outshot the Billikens, 10-0, and had six penalty corners to the visitors' zero.
- In the third, Jones registered the first goal of her collegiate career on a nice finish from about 10 yards out off a pass by senior Chloe Lucky.
- Lucky was dangerous on the right side all afternoon and was one of six La Salle players with two or more shots on goal.
- Chapin shifted from a passer to a scorer in the 41st minute when she went to the left side on a penalty stroke to put the Explorers in front, 4-1.
- Saint Louis brought it back to a two-goal margin in the 46th minute and the score remained the same until right before the final buzzer.
- Hackman converted on her second goal of the year with just 29 ticks left on the clock to complete the scoring. Fellow frosh Noralie Pareau Dumont was credited with an assist on the play.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- All told, La Salle accumulated 26 shots and had two periods (2nd and 3rd) in which they had 10 shots.
- Defensively, senior Emma Provost picked up her second win of the year in goal and tallied a pair of saves.Â
- SLU goalkeeper Sasha Sander had 12 saves for the visitors, who fell to 0-9 on the year and 0-3 in A-10 play.
