PHILADELPHIA – After a big win over rival Saint Joseph's on Saturday, the La Salle University men's soccer team will continue Atlantic 10 Conference play on Wednesday when the team travels to Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. contest.
SWEET, SWEET VICTORY
- The Explorers shut out A-10 and Philadelphia Soccer Six foe Saint Joseph's at home Saturday night, 2-0, for their third clean sheet of the season.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Brett Werner made a season-high nine saves and recorded his second shutout of the season, while freshman Franc Gamiz Quer and senior Pat McCarthy found the back of the net. Sophomores Colin Bateman and Omari Cotterell also picked up assists.
- The win put La Salle at 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the A-10. But even more impressive, the Explorers improved to 5-1-1 at home this season. La Salle is 3-0-1 over its last four games.
TRIO OF EXPLORERS EARN WEEKLY AWARDS
- Brett Werner picked up two weekly honors for his performance against the Hawks, earning Defensive Player of the Week from both the A-10 and Soccer Six.
- The Explorers swept the Soccer Six weekly awards, as Pat McCarthy was also named Soccer Six Player of the Week and Franc Gamiz Quer collected Rookie of the Week.
- Through 11 games, La Salle has piled up a total of 10 weekly accolades.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND
- The Rams are tied with the Explorers at 2-1-0 in the A-10, and they are 5-3-2 overall.
- Rhode Island has also had success at home with a 3-1-1 home record, including a 3-1 victory over Fordham on Saturday.
- Filippo Tamburini leads the team with five goals and two assists, while Edvin Akselsen has dished out seven assists to go with two goals.
- Stefan Schmidt has played every minute in goal for the Rams, posting a 1.12 goals against average and a save percentage of .800.
