Women’s Basketball Hopes to Continue Hot Streak at Norfolk State

PHILADELPHIA – After two-straight victories, the La Salle women's basketball team (3-1) look to take its third in a row on Friday as the Explorers take on the Norfolk State Spartans (2-2) from Norfolk, Va. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.
 
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • With a 21-points come-from-behind win this past Sunday at Penn St., the Blue & Gold move to 3-1 on the season which is the best start in program history since 2008-09. La Salle has won back-to-back games by establishing at least a 16-point comeback.
  • Against Penn St., the Explorers were down by as many as 21 point, including down 20 with 8:23 remaining in play. La Salle outscored the Lady Lions 33-11 over the remainder of the game to pull out its first-ever win against Penn St. and first win over a Big Ten team since defeating Northwestern, 69-67, on Dec. 22, 1988.
  • A freshman trio of Amy Jacobs, Claire Jacobs, and Jordon Lewis scored a combined 39 points at PSU, including 21 of the team's 33 in the final frame.
  • Rookie Claire Jacobs is the Explorers leading scorer with 14.8 ppg this season on 47.8% (22-of-46) shooting from the floor and 50.0% (10-of-20) from long range. She's eclipsed 15 points of more in three of her four games this season.
  • Sophomore Kayla Spruill is second on the team in scoring at 11.3 ppg. The Baltimore, Md. native is hitting 33.3% (12-of-36) of her shots. She's also fourth on the squad with 5.5 rpg.
  • Senior Shalina Miller is corralling a team best 7.0 rpg and deflecting a team high 2.5 bpg. Miller set the single season program record last year with 64 blocks and is 28 shy of tying the all-time record set by Amy Griffin '18 at 151.
  • The Blue & Gold are averaging 72.5 points per outing this season and hitting 38.8% from the field. Those numbers are 17.7 more points per game and 4.8% better than last season.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS:
  • Norfolk State is 2-2 overall and 1-2 in Division I play this season.
  • The Spartans are averaging 63.0 ppg against DI opponents, led individually by Chanette Hicks with 20.3 ppg.
  • Hicks and the Spartans are coming off a 72-58 win over High Point this past Wednesday.
  • La'Deja James is the next top scorer against DI opponents with 12.3 ppg.
THE SERIES:
  • La Salle leads the all-time series 2-0.
  • Both were played in Philadelphia with the most recent matchup last season.
  • The 2018-19 game was the first win of head coach Mountain MacGillivray's career as the Explorers won, 62-52.
