Women's Water Polo | February 1, 2019
PROVIDENCE, Ri. -- The La Salle women's water polo team dropped its first game of the season to start the weekend's action at the Bruno Classic. Brown, a team that received votes in the national poll, got off to a fast start and held on to win 14-8 despite a late surge by the Explorers.
MATCH NOTES
- La Salle was outscored 7-1 in the first quarter. It wasn't until 3:33 remaining that the team in white caps got on the board courtesy of a Katelynn Kubo strike.
- The bulk of the Explorers' scoring came from Kubo and Sarah DeFusco. The pair each had three goals on the night and consisted of 75 percent of the team's end product.
- The closest the women came to catching Brown occurred in the second quarter; with 5:44 left, Madison Martinez found the back of the net to close the gap to 7-4. However, after that strike, the Ivy League opposition would score six unanswered and effectively put the game out of reach.
- A tale of two halves: although La Salle trailed Brown 11-4 after two quarters, they claimed the second half of the game, 4-3. This included a gritty run in the final quarter where the Explorers finished 3-1.
- Brown's scoring charts were chock-full of double-trouble. The opposing team had four women with multiple goals in the game.
WHAT'S NEXT
- La Salle look to rebound from the opening loss with a doubleheader on Saturday. They take on Saint Francis in a morning matchup at 9:15 a.m., then battle Bucknell in the afternoon at 2:15 p.m.
