Men's Track and Field | February 12, 2019

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior Nathan Gillis and junior Darian Alston of the La Salle University men's track and field team captured weekly honors from the Atlantic 10 Conference on Tuesday. Gillis was named Co-Track Performer of the Week, while Alston was tabbed Field Performer of the Week.

Gillis set a new school record in the 800-meter run at the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday. He became the first-ever Explorer to run in under 1:50 as he placed 10th out of 269 finishers in the event with a record time of 1:49.49. It is the fastest 800 time in the A-10 so far this year.

Alston already picks up his second A-10 weekly honor of the season after just his third meet with the team. A transfer from Penn State, Alston has made a major impact already, breaking a 21-year-old school record in the triple jump during his La Salle debut, and shattered his own record this past weekend at the Fastrack National Invite. He leapt 15.15 meters for fourth place out of 50 in the triple jump, posting the top mark in the A-10 thus far, while also winning the long jump with a mark of 6.89 meters.

The Explorers will head to the Princeton Invitational on Saturday for their final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships.
