Baseball Rallies for 7-5 Win over Rider in Home Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Trailing 5-2 in the seventh inning, the La Salle University baseball team rallied for five runs to grab a 7-5 victory over the Rider Broncs in its home opener from Hank DeVincent Field on Friday. Senior Ben Faso went 4-for-5 to lead four Explorers with multi-hit games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rider struck first in the top of the first, but La Salle quickly answered in the bottom half. Faso doubled and then scored on an RBI single by freshman Quentin Brown to tie it up at one apiece. Brown then crossed the plate on an RBI double to right by junior Ryan Guckin to provide a 2-1 lead.
  • The Broncs answered the call, however, and picked up runs in each of the next four innings to take a three-run advantage, 5-2. Starting pitcher Pete Soporowski held the Explorers in check through five innings of work, striking out six along the way.
  • The seventh inning was the turning point for La Salle, getting four runs on four hits to surge ahead. Faso drove a double off the center field wall to bring home freshman Nick O'Day and senior Peyton Sorrels, making it a one-run game.
  • The next batter, Brown, followed that up with a single to center, allowing Faso to race home for the tying run. Later in the inning, senior Kevin McGowan knocked in Brown with another RBI single to give La Salle a 6-5 advantage.
  • Faso added another insurance run in the eighth inning to bring Sorrels home, as the Explorers opened up a two-run lead. Senior Connor Hinchliffe came on to close it out in the ninth and easily converted his third save in as many attempts.
