PHILADELPHIA - A game-ending 9-0 run by Richmond broke a 75-75 tie and propelled the Spiders past the La Salle University men's basketball team at Tom Gola Arena at TruMark Financial Center on Saturday. Graduate student
Pookie Powell had 24 points to lead the Explorers, who dropped their third straight Atlantic 10 contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A pair of three-pointers from sophomore David Beatty and junior Isiah Deas sandwiched a dunk from freshman Ed Croswell as the Explorers (8-18, 6-8 A-10) took an early 8-4 lead at the 17:39 mark of the first half.
- Richmond (12-15, 6-8 A-10) bounced back with six straight points and extended a lead to 21-14 following a three-pointer by Jacob Gilyard with 11:50 on the clock.
- Following a timeout, the Explorers charged back and pulled to within two thanks in part to Powell, who knocked down a pair of three-pointers in a run that brought the score to 26-24 in favor of the Spiders.
- The visitors, who shot 68.0 percent in the first half, proceeded to push their lead to nine, 38-29, with just over five minutes left in the opening half.
- La Salle did close the period strong, outscoring the Spiders, 9-3, over the final three minutes to go into the locker room down just one at 44-43.
- A jumper from Beatty to begin the second stanza gave the Explorers a one-point lead, but a run of 11 straight by Richmond established its largest lead at 55-45 with 16 minutes left.
- Powell ended the drought with a three, and sophomore Jamir Moultrie provided a spark with five straight points to cap the 8-0 run at pull La Salle to within two.
- Less than four minutes later, Powell drained a tough fadeaway to once again give push the Explorers on top by a point, 59-58.
- A three-point play from freshman Jared Kimbrough lifted La Salle to its largest lead of the game at 64-60 midway through the half.
- Richmond responded again with seven consecutive points, with Gilyard accounting for four of them on a pair of layups.
- The back-and-forth game would continue as the Explorers clawed their way back, and a three-pointer from Deas tied the game at 75-75 with 2:04 left.
- From there, La Salle went cold offensively, missing its final three shots and committing two turnovers as the Spiders pulled away.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Richmond shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the game, the highest by a La Salle opponent this season.
- In addition to Powell's 24 points, Deas closed with 16 points and four assists.
- Croswell led the Explorers in rebounding with nine, marking just the third time in the last eight games that the 6-8 freshman has not posted double-figure boards.
- Grant Golden finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Spiders, who had 20 assists on the afternoon.
