Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Defeat of Season, Falls to Manhattan 9-4 at Home

PHILADELPHIA -- In a low scoring affair, women's lacrosse suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday via a 9-4 score line to Manhattan. The loss was only their second at home since March of 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers went down early to a pair of Manhattan scores inside five minutes of the first half. The team clawed back after two goals from junior Gabby Burton equalized the score; they even took a 3-2 lead at the 11-minute mark courtesy of sophomore Maddie Dachowski.
  • La Salle would take that slim advantage to the half, but out of the break it was all Manhattan. The Jaspers spread the wealth and enjoyed a goal-scoring frenzy—the visitors rattled off seven straight strikes from seven different names. The Explorers didn't have an answer until under three minutes to play when sophomore Bridget Ruskey got on the scoresheet, which proved the only goal of the second half for the home team.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle saw a two-game winning streak against the Jaspers snapped in part because of a goal output that was their lowest since an 8-4 loss to Temple early last year.
  • Burton with her two first-half scores was the only Explorer with multiple goals in the game.
  • Senior Isabel Caddick and sophomore Priya Kavuru paced everyone in groundballs with three each, while senior Courtney Shoults led all Explorers with two caused turnovers. Sophomore Emily Johnston led the way in draw controls with four, trailed by fellow sophomore Allison Hunter with three.
  • While the Jaspers distributed the spoils evenly, senior Caitlin Murphy led the charge in points with two goals and an assist. Goalkeeper Nikki Prestiano often got the ball rolling on attacks with a team-high seven groundballs recorded.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers will endeavor to return to winning ways at McCarthy Stadium. They host Delaware on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a rescheduled meeting from last week.
