PHILADELPHIA - La Salle University men's basketball alum
B.J. Johnson has signed a 10-day contract with the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association, it was announced on Friday. Johnson, who graduated from La Salle in 2018, is in his first season of professional basketball and had been playing with the Lakeland Magic of the NBA's G League.
A 6-7 guard/forward who was a two-time First Team All-Philadelphia Big 5 selection during his two seasons with the Explorers, Johnson played 37 games in the G League this season, averaging 14.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 30.0 minutes per game.
Additionally, he was shooting 42.6 percent from three-point range and is coming off a game against the Capital City Go-Go where he tallied 19 points (8-10 FG), three rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a pair of steals in a 109-98 win.
Johnson, who was also a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection in 2017-18, averaged 20.8 points per game as a senior and became the 56th player in school history to score 1,000 points in a career, despite playing at La Salle for just two seasons after transferring from Syracuse.
Atlanta (20-41) hosts Chicago on Friday, March 1 at State Farm Arena before concluding a home-and-home series with the Bulls in Chicago on Sunday, March 3. The Hawks will square off with the Philadelphia 76ers two more times this season but both of those meetings will take place in Atlanta.
