Janay Sanders scored a career high 18 points apiece as the La Salle women's basketball team (3-20, 0-9 A-10) fell to Davidson (13-8, 7-1 A-10), 80-61. The game was a real homecoming for Sanders, who had nearly 70 fans in attendance. The rookie grew up just a few miles from Davidson.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle was quick out of the gate, scoring the first four points of the game, while holding Davidson scoreless through the first 2:24. The Wildcats quickly responded, taking a 6-0 spurt over a 3:56 span. Davidson held a 6-3 advantage the rest of the frame to hold a 12-7 lead after one. La Salle held the Wildcats to just 5-of-21 shooting in the period.
- Opposite of the first quarter, the second was an offensive shootout with Davidson holding a 25-19 benefit. Five different Explorers scored points, with four scorers with at least four. Freshman Shayla Sweeney led the squad with five points. Collectively, the team shot 56.3% (9-of-16) in the quarter.
- Davidson opened the third period with a 12-7 scoring effort over the initial 5:35. The Explorers answered with a 13-9 effort during the remainder of the stanza. Sanders accounted for 13 of the Explorers 20 points in the period.
- The Wildcats took a 14-5 advantage until the media break at 4:48 in the fourth frame. La Salle held the upper hand in the remainder of the period, outscoring the home team 10-8. Reese registered six of the team's 10.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Reese's points came on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor. The senior added eight rebounds to her stat line.
- Sanders went 5-of-9 from the field and 7-of-15 from the free throw line.
- Freshman Kayla Spruill added seven points and two blocks off the bench.
- Collectively the Explorers shot a season high 48.9% (22-of-45) from the field.
- La Salle also had a season best 38 points in the paint.
