Women's Water Polo | February 8, 2019

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Women's water polo have a full schedule at the weekend as they set their sights on opponents old and new. They open the Bucknell Invitational against a Siena team whom they've played four times in program history, and whom they'll face twice more this season. Two of the teams in the Invitational, Saint Francis and Bucknell, were part of La Salle's four-game bout at last weekend's Bruno Classic. Additionally, they get their first ever look at Salem University on Sunday.

ABOUT THE EXPLORERS
  • They began their season at the Bruno Classic with losses to Brown, Saint Francis, Bucknell, and Harvard.
  • Sarah DeFusco paced the team with eleven goals at the Classic, while two other women scored multiple times--Katelynn Kubo finished with three goals and Jillian Delisle netted two.
  • Kubo recorded a team-high five steals and was tied for the team lead in assists with three. Delisle, Madelyn Koerper, Karle Linden, and Emily Rogers were the other top providers over the weekend.
  • Delisle, last season's top scorer, was most effective in a different category: kickouts drawn. The sophomore drew six exclusions in the competition, the best mark on the team, while nabbing three steals to cap a well-rounded quartet of performances.
  • In goal, Jenny Fermaintt led the Explorers with 21 goals saved over three games, followed by Rogers with six saves in two games played. Fermaintt also held the highest save percentage at 35 percent. Rogers, for her part, finished the Classic as joint-top provider on the team and finished tied-second with three steals.
SCOUTING SIENA
  • Siena competed in last weekend's Bruno Classic to begin the season and left with an 0-4 record. The Saints dropped games to Bucknell, Harvard, Cal Lutheran, and Brown.
  • Junior Diana Fernandez paced the team with eleven points (seven goals, four assists) and ten exclusions drawn. Freshman Bianca Prinsloo started the season with the stickiest fingers, notching six steals.
  • The Saints are scoring at a rate of 5.75 goals per game, while conceding an average of 12.50 goals.
  • Game time: Saturday, 12:40 p.m.
SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS
  • Saint Francis lone victory of the Bruno Classic was a 13-8 win vs. La Salle. They dropped their remaining three games to Wagner, Saint Francis (NY.), and Cal Lutheran to start the season 1-3.
  • The Red Flash were led by Metzli Enriquez, who had seven goals over the weekend in Rhode Island. The team's other top scorers were freshman Breanna Dupperon and senior Ani Aghakhanian, both with five, and junior Kelsey Gring with four.
  • Game time: Saturday, 7:20 p.m.
SCOUTING SALEM
  • This is Salem's first season playing in the NCAA. The program, recently revived in 2017, competed in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) last season.
  • Eight of the ten players on the Tigers' roster are freshmen and seven of the ten are internationals. The experience they will rely comes from junior Maryanna Antoniou of Athens, Greece, and sophomore Chloe Woodbine of Brisbane, Australia.
  • Game time: Sunday, 12:00 p.m.
SCOUTING BUCKNELL
  • Bucknell almost left Brown with a clean sweep of the Bruno Classic, tripping over Wagner in their final game to finish with a 3-1 record. The Bison, currently ranked 24th in the national poll, defeated La Salle 16-6 last weekend.
  • Sophomore Ally Furano topped the team with thirteen goals over four games, while senior Emily Konishi finished second with eight. Third-most prolific was sophomore Kali Hyham; the daughter of Explorers head coach Tom Hyham had a strong weekend in front of net with six goals.
  • Game time: Sunday, 5:20 p.m.
