Baseball | March 1, 2019

PHILADELPHIA – With two series wins already under its belt, the La Salle University baseball team will host the Albany Great Danes for a three-game weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.

SERIES INFO (Game times subject to change due to weather) RAY MAKES IT BACK-TO-BACK BIG 5 PITCHING HONORS
  • After junior Matt Holt earned Big 5 Pitcher of the Week during the opening week of the season, classmate Jackson Ray made it back-to-back for the Explorers as he earned the honor for week two.
  • Ray struck out seven over seven scoreless innings of work on the mound to help La Salle to a 3-0 shutout victory over Rider, picking up his first win of the season.
LA SALLE CAPTURES SECOND STRAIGHT SERIES
  • La Salle won its second series of the year by taking 2-of-3 games from Rider last weekend.
  • Senior Ben Faso went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and freshman Quentin Brown drove in a pair of runs to lead four Explorers with multi-hit games. The Explorers overcame a 5-2 deficit and scored five runs over the seventh and eighth innings to snag a 7-5 win.
  • Ray shut it down in game two, scattering just five hits over his seven innings on the hill. He, junior Erik Janss and senior Connor Hincliffe combined for a shutout and La Salle scored three in the seventh to claim a 3-0 victory.
  • The Explorers fell behind 5-0 in the series finale before tying the game in the seventh. However, Rider scored twice in the ninth and La Salle added one more run but fell just short, 7-6. Junior Ryan Guckin and freshman Matt Rivera went homered in the defeat.
BANKIN' ON THE BULLPEN
  • La Salle's bullpen has been as reliable as they come over the first two series. The unit has a lowly 0.72 ERA to go with a .158 opponent batting average through six games.
  • Hinchliffe has been a key part to that, as he stood as the national leader in saves after securing his fourth of the year on Saturday. He's yet to give up a run through 5.1 innings pitched and has struck out 11 of the 19 batters he's faced.
SCOUTING ALBANY
  • Albany has played just one series so far, dropping 2-of-3 at Coppin State this past weekend. The Great Danes struggled in 6-2 and 15-3 losses before bouncing back with a 4-0 win in the finale.
  • Travis Collins is hitting .400, while Matt Codispoti is batting .375 with a home run and four RBIs for the Great Danes.
  • John Clayton (1-0) and Joe Kruszka (1 Sv) combined for a shutout in Albany's lone win. Dominic Savino (ND, 1.80 ERA) and Kenny McLean (0-1) got the starts in the first two games.
