Rookies Help Softball to Win Over Brown; Fall to Columbia

CLEARWATER, Fla. – In the opening day of the USF/Clearwater Recreation Showcase Tournament, the La Salle softball team (3-9) split a pair of games against two Ivy League opponents. The Explorers were downed by Columbia (3-9) in the first game of the day, 5-1, before claiming a 9-6 victory over Brown (4-5).
 
In the win over Brown, the freshman class accounted for seven of the team's season high 14 hits and drove in five of the season best nine runs scored.
 
COLUMBIA 5, La SALLE 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a scoreless affair until the Lions broke through in the fourth and fifth innings, plating a run in each to take a 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh, Columbia added some insurance by scoring three runs on a two-out rally. The spurt included three hits, including a triple and home run.
  • La Salle had a last chance in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Ashley Mendenhall launched a double to left center with one away in the inning. Freshman Cailey Joyce was up next and drove the first pitch of the at bat to left center for an RBI knock.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Joyce (2-3) started against the Lions and threw the complete game. The rookie gave up four earned runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out two.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Mendenhall had a 2-for-3 game with a double and run scored.
  • Joyce finished 1-for-3, driving in the lone run.
  • Junior Courtney Shupp ended the game 1-for-2.
 
La SALLE 9, BROWN 6
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Mendenhall continued her success from game one, lacing a triple to right center to push freshman Natalie Rios in from second to take a 1-0 lead in the opening frame.
  • The Bears responded in the bottom of the second by chipping an unearned run in to tie the game.
  • Shupp regained the lead for the Explorers in the third with a sacrifice fly, scoring senior Emma Schweigert.
  • Brown quickly answered, plating three on the flip side of the inning on four hits. The Bears led 4-2.
  • Rios knotted the game at four after lining a two-run single to right center. Freshman Audrey LaBouliere and sophomore Deanna Pineiro scored on the knock.
  • LaBouliere picked up an RBI with a sac fly in the fifth to put La Salle in the elad, 5-4.
  • In the final frame, LaBouliere added another RBI to her total with a single past the shortstop, allowing Shupp to touch home. After LaBouliere stole second, junior Emily Conaway sent a single to center to plate LaBouliere and freshman Mackenzie Vogler.
  • Brown was able to add another two runs in its last at bats, however the Explorers prevailed.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (1-5) picked up her first win of the season in the complete game. Orlowski struck out a career high seven batters while allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Rios had a career game going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Her hits, RBIs, and runs are all career highs for the rookie.
  • LaBouliere finished the game 2-for-3 with toe RBIs, two runs, and a stolen base.
  • Conaway finished 2-for-4, plating two runs and scoring once.
  • Shupp scored twice and drove in a run.
  • Mendenhall recorded the first triple of her career, adding an RBI.
  • Peneiro and Vogler each registered a pair of base knocks and a run scored.
