Baseball Falls at Villanova Despite Strong Pitching

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Junior starting pitcher Jackson Ray allowed only one run, but the La Salle University baseball team's offense was shut down by Villanova on Sunday in a 1-0 setback in the series finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Ryan Guckin hit a two-out single down the third base line in the first inning, but that was the only hit for the Explorers on the afternoon, as Villanova starter Jimmy Kingsbury threw a complete game shutout.
  • The Explorers threatened in the top of the third when sophomore Tommy Toal and senior Peyton Sorrels both walked, but La Salle couldn't convert the opportunity.
  • The only run in the game came in the bottom of the third for the Wildcats on a Nick Lorusso RBI single to center field.
  • Ray kept the Explorers in it as he worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth with a strikeout swinging and a flyout to end the inning. However, the La Salle offense just couldn't get it going.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Ray allowed only the one run on eight hits over 6.1 innings of work, adding six strikeouts. Sophomore Colin Kennedy threw 1.2 scoreless innings of relief as well.
  • Kingsbury (3-1) struck out five over his complete-game outing for the Wildcats.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle (10-8) will visit Delaware on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. contest.
