PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University baseball team racked up a season-best 18 hits and scored 12 unanswered runs to pick up a 13-6 win over Albany from Hank DeVincent Field on Saturday. The Explorers overcame a 6-1 deficit with 12 runs late.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Colin Kennedy didn't allow a hit through the first 3.2 innings and piled up seven strikeouts over his first four innings.
- The Explorers put runners on in each of the first three innings and took advantage in the third frame with the bases loaded. Sophomore Tommy Toal scored the game's first run on a double play groundout, but Albany was able to escape further damage.
- Kennedy only allowed one base runner until the fourth, but that's when the Great Danes found their groove, scoring three runs, capped off by a two-run triple by Patrick Lagravinese, making it 3-1.
- Albany added to its lead in the fifth with three more runs to open up a 6-1 advantage.
- Things suddenly came together for the La Salle offense in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs on seven hits. Toal started things off with an RBI single to center that brought home senior Kevin McGowan.
- Senior Peyton Sorrels then smacked a two-run triple to center to score Toal and senior Brett Simon. Freshman Nick O'Day kept it going with an RBI double to left that allowed Sorrels to trot home, making it a two-run game.
- Senior Ben Faso put the finishing touches on the six-run sixth inning with a two-run homer to left, suddenly thrusting the Explorers in front, 7-6.
- Not finished yet, La Salle tacked on four more runs in the seventh, with Faso adding to his big day with a bases-clearing three-run double to left for a commanding 11-6 lead.
- In the eight, senior Brian Tagoe scored on a wild pitch and then McGowan scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jack Cucinotta, extending the Explorers' advantage to 13-6.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Nine different Explorers had a hit in the game. Faso was 3-for-5 with five RBIs, while Simon was 3-of-4 with two runs. Toal went 2-for-3 with three runs and junior Ryan Guckin went 3-for-4.
- Kennedy finished the day with seven punchouts and scattered five runs on five hits over 4.2 innings of work.Sophomore Colin Scanlon took over in the fifth and earned his second win after throwing 3.1 scorelesss innings of relief with just one hit and four strikeouts. Niko Jenkins took the ball in the ninth and struck out a pair.
