ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The La Salle softball team (5-14) dropped its first two Atlantic 10 games of the season at Saint Louis (7-17) on Saturday afternoon. SLU took game one, 4-1, and mercy ruled the Explorers, 11-3, in five innings during the second bout.
SLU 4, La SALLE 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Billikens jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning with an RBI double.
- Saint Louis Added three in the third on four hits.
- With runners on second and third in the sixth inning, sophomore Ashley Mendenhall hit a sac fly to right in order to plate junior Emily Conaway from third.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Freshman Cailey Joyce (3-5) was credited with the loss in a complete game effort. Joyce allowed four earned runs in the game on six hits.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- La Salle recorded two hits in the loss and drew three walks.
- Freshman Natalie Rios went 1-for-1 with a pair of free passes.
- Freshman Mackenzie Vogler finished the game 1-for-3.
- Conaway scored the lone run, while drawing a walk.
SLU 11, La SALLE 3 – F/5 INNINGS
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- SLU jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one inning of play on seven hits and a walk.
- La Salle cut the deficit to five with a two-run effort in the top half of the third. Mendenhall ripped an RBI single past the first basemen to drive in sophomore Deanna Pineiro from third. Senior Emma Schweigert was up next, reaching on an error to plate Conaway.
- The Billikens answered in the bottom half with three hits that resulted in one run.
- Conaway scored freshman Audrey LaBouliere from second with a base knock to left center.
- Saint Louis extended its lead with a three-run fourth inning to initiate the mercy rule.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (1-7) received the decision with seven earned runs over four innings of work. Orlowski struck out one and allowed 14 hits and two walks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Conaway was 2-for-2 with an RBI, walk, and run scored.
- Mendenhall recorded a hit in three at bats with an RBI single.
- Vogler and Pinerio were each 1-for-2.
- LaBouliere scored a run with a walk.
- Schweigert registered an RBI.
