Di Vietro Hits Grand Slam as Explorers Top Bonnies for First A-10 Win

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Freshmen Nick Di Vietro and Ross Mulhall came through in the clutch to help the La Salle University baseball team pick up its first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season in 11 innings on Saturday, 10-5, at St. Bonaventure in the series finale. Mulhall drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th and Di Vietro put the game away with a grand slam.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Peyton Sorrels scored the opening run on a wild pitch to put La Salle ahead in the third inning.
  • St. Bonaventure had a response in the bottom half of the frame, however, and took a 3-1 lead heading to the fourth.
  • The Explorers countered in the fifth though with three runs of their own to go back in front. Sorrels scored on a passed ball and then junior Ryan Guckin drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at three apiece. Senior Kevin McGowan then scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jack Cucinotta to give La Salle a 4-3 lead.
  • Guckin made it a 5-3 lead in the top of the ninth by driving a single to right, allowing sophomore Tommy Toal to score.
  • La Salle tried to close it out in the ninth, but the Bonnies pulled within one on a triple by Kevin Koziol and then tied it by scoring on an errant throw, forcing extra innings.
  • Sophomore Colin Kennedy entered in relief in the 10th and ended the inning with a 4-6-3 double play to keep the Explorers alive.
  • With Toal on second, Mulhall hammered a double to left field to bring in the go-ahead run in Toal. Two batters later, Di Vietro took the first pitch he saw with the bases loaded over the left field fence for his first collegiate home run, a grand slam making it 10-5.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Five different Explorers had multi-hit games. Guckin was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, while Di Vietro, Sorrels, Toal and freshman Nick O'Day all had two hits each.
  • Junior Jackson Ray scattered two earned runs over 3.2 innings as the starter on the mound. Classmate Matt Holt was a difference maker in relief, striking out four over 4.1 scoreless innings. Kennedy allowed only one hit over his two innings of work.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle will play at Lehigh on Tuesday at 3 p.m. as part of the Liberty Bell Classic.
