Women's Lacrosse Falls in Close Contest with Marist 12-11

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Only a stone's throw from the Hudson River, goals were flowing at Tenney Stadium as Marist drifted ahead in the final minutes to secure a 12-11 win over La Salle. Saturday's game saw the Explorers score in double digits for the second consecutive game and the third in six this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Much like the river, there was an ebb and flow to a game largely predicated on runs. Only twice did a team score nonconsecutively.
  • The Red Foxes caught a rapid current to begin the game, tallying three times on either side of a La Salle strike from sophomore Bridget Ruskey. At the 17-minute mark, Marist held a 6-1 advantage.
  • La Salle responded in truly impressive fashion with a run of their own. The surge was powered by their free-scoring sophomore class; Emily Johnston, Annina Iacobucci, Maddie Dachowski, and Ruskey each found the back of the net to close the gap to 6-5 at the half. Momentum Explorers.
  • The visiting team continued their unanswerable barrage in the second frame with scores from Ruskey and senior Isabel Caddick. With 26:51 remaining, La Salle pulled in front 7-6 for the first time in the game.
  •  It would last a minute before Marist struck for three and got their noses in front.
  • The speed of play quickened down the stretch. Dachowski emerged and scored twice to lock the game at 9-9. The hosts responded to regain the lead before sophomores Allison Hunter and Johnston netted to give the Explorers an 11-10 advantage.
  • The Red Foxes found the final run inside six minutes. Junior Carly Grant equalized and fellow classmate Samantha Mehalick, Marist's top scorer, let fly the go-ahead goal with 3:28 remaining.
 INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle's six-goal run from 16:01 in the first half to 26:51 in the second was their longest scoring streak this season. They have not equaled or exceeded six-straight strikes since April 15, 2018 vs. St. Bonaventure.
  • Usual names: Dachowski, Ruskey and Johnston combined for eight of the Explorers' 11 goals. They're also first, second, and third on the team in points this season with Dachowski at 17, Ruskey at 15 and Johnston at 11.
  • Ruskey led La Salle in draw controls with three, followed by Iacobucci on two. Johnston was active in her own right with a team-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Sophomore Molly Loughlin was active in net with 20 saves on 32 shots, good for a 62.5% save percentage.
 UP NEXT
  • The Explorers travel to Virginia for a matchup with Radford on Tuesday morning. First draw is at 10 a.m.
