Baseball Visits Lehigh for Liberty Bell Classic Matchup

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team will hit the road once again on Tuesday for a Liberty Bell Classic matchup at Lehigh at 3 p.m.
 
FIRST CONFERENCE WIN IN THE BOOKS
  • La Salle picked up its first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season at St. Bonaventure on Saturday in extra innings, 10-5.
  • The Explorers dropped a tough doubleheader to the Bonnies on Friday. In the opening game, La Salle led 5-3 in the seventh before allowing the final 11 runs in a 14-5 setback. In the second game, the Bonnies scored the go-ahead run on an error in the eighth in a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat.
  • Freshman Aidan Frye (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K) and sophomore Colin Scanlon (5.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 5 K) put forth quality starts on the mound in both games.
  • In Sunday's finale, the Explorers had a 5-3 lead in the ninth, but the Bonnies tied it on a throwing error with two outs to force extras. In the 11th inning, freshman Ross Mulhall drove in sophomore Tommy Toal for the go-ahead run and then freshman Nick Di Vietro sealed the win with a grand slam.
NEWS AND NOTES
  • Just 28 games into the season, La Salle (14-14) has already matched its win total from last season.
  • Tommy Toal currently has an eight-game hitting streak going. He's batting .464 over that stretch.
  • Freshmen Nick O'Day and Matt Rivera are currently riding five-game hit streaks.
  • Five Explorers - Ryan Guckin (.337), Peyton Sorrels (.320), O'Day (.319), Kevin McGowan (.311) and Toal (.307) - are all batting over .300 for the year.
  • Sophomore Mike Jenkins (3-0, 2.87 ERA) has won each of his three starts this season, all coming in the month of March.
SCOUTING LEHIGH
  • The Mountain Hawks enter the week at 11-15 overall, 2-5 in the Patriot League and 2-4 at home.
  • Lehigh won the series opener at Holy Cross Saturday, 5-3, before dropping the last two games, 4-1 and 5-4.
  • Ryan Malloy leads the team at the plate, hitting .344 with seven home runs, 25 runs and 25 RBIs. Jeff Shanfeldt is also batting .318 with 23 RBIs, while Lehigh is hitting .249 as a team.
  • On the hill, the Mountain Hawks have a team ERA of 6.23 with a WHIP of 1.57.
