Water polo

Women's Water Polo | April 14, 2019

VILLANOVA, Pa.– In the final game of the 2019 season, women's water polo continued the program's growth under head coach Tom Hyham with a 14-12 triumph over Siena, tying a bow on a tremendous campaign. The win gave La Salle 10 victories on the season and five in MAAC play. Sophomore Sarah DeFusco, the team's leading scorer over 33 games, recorded a single-game career high with ten points (seven goals, three assists) against the Saints.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • DeFusco led the Explorers with her seven strikes, followed by classmates Madison Martinez with four goals and Karle Linden with two.
  • La Salle's number eight also provided for three goals, second highest on the team to sophomore Jillian Delisle's seven dishes.
  • Delisle paced La Salle in exclusions earned with five in the contest. Her two steals were tied for the most with Linden.
  • In goal, junior Jenny Fermaintt recorded nine saves on 21 shots for a save percentage of 42.9%.
COACH'S THOUGHTS
  • Coach Hyham reflected on this past weekend and the 2019 season as a whole, saying: "In looking back on the 2019 season, I am extremely pleased with how the ladies charged into the final weekend.  Knowing that the highest we could finish was fifth place and out of the conference championship tournament did not take away from their drive to finish as strong as possible.  During the first week or so of the season we all met and discussed what our goals would be for this season and the main point was to get 10 wins which was accomplished in our final game.  Other big milestones were to snap an over 30 game losing streak, get a conference win, get back to back wins and win a game at our home pool.  All of these were checked off this season by the tremendous athletes on this team.  Being a coach for many years I have a distinct style that I typically choose to use and I am fairly certain that I and my assistant coach, Lindsay, learned more from players this single season about being flexible with our styles than we ever have in the past.  I truly believe that I learned just as much, if not more than my players.  I am excited about the future of this team and what the seasons to come have to offer.  Not having anyone graduate bodes very well for us to come smashing into 2020 with full steam."
