Cucinotta Goes Yard Twice, Scanlon Throws Gem in La Salle’s 7-1 Win at Saint Joseph’s

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Jack Cucinotta hit two home runs and classmate Colin Scanlon allowed just one run over five innings to lead the La Salle University baseball team to a 7-1 victory over Big 5 and Atlantic 10 foe Saint Joseph's on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After homering in game one on Thursday, Cucinotta continued to swing a hot bat as he launched a two-run shot to left center in the second inning to score freshman Tatem Levins for an early 2-0 lead.
  • La Salle then extended their advantage with three runs in the fourth inning. Cucinotta came in to score on an RBI double down the third base line by freshman Ross Mulhall to make it 3-0.
  • Senior Peyton Sorrels and sophomore Tommy Toal continued the scoring in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles, bringing home freshman Nick O'Day along with Mulhall, pushing the lead to 5-0.
  • After Scanlon kept the Hawks off the board through the first three frames, Saint Joe's got a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Liam Bendo.
  • Cucinotta then sent his second homer of the day to left field in the fifth, once again scoring Levins, who had a two-homer day on Thursday, giving La Salle a 7-1 lead.
  • Just one day after the Hawks' offense couldn't be stopped, Scanlon put them to rest, getting through the fifth with no trouble with a 7-1 advantage.
  • The lefty then handed the ball to junior right-hander Matt Holt, who held Saint Joe's scoreless through three innings. Senior Connor Hinchliffe then came on in the ninth and closed out the road win for the Explorers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Scanlon (4-2) scattered just one run on five hits while striking out five over five innings of work, picking up his second consecutive win.
  • Holt allowed only three hits over three shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts.
  • Cucinotta has hit more home runs (3) in the two games against the Hawks so far than he did the entire season entering the series. He now has five on the year.
  • La Salle (20-19) gets to 20 wins for the first time since the 2015 season.
UP NEXT
