PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University baseball team will continue its eight-game home stretch with two midweek contests against UMBC and LIU Brooklyn this week.
LEVINS TAKES HOME WEEKLY HONORS
- Freshman Tatem Levins picked up three weekly awards on Monday. He repeated as Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week and was named Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week as well as Philadelphia Review Hitter of the Week.
- Levins had a pair of four-hit games and posted a .611/.682/.944 slash line over five contests last week, driving in seven runs, scoring six runs and registering six doubles.
LAST TIME OUT
- La Salle went 2-3 over its five games last week, splitting midweek games against Saint Peter's and Bucknell before hosting Massachusetts in a three-game series.
- The Explorers took the first game of a doubleheader with the Minutemen on Saturday. Levins went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three doubles, while seniors Peyton Sorrels and Ben Faso each had two hits apiece. Sophomore Colin Scanlon allowed just four runs over a career-high six innings of work on the mound.
- La Salle jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second game, but UMass scored eight unanswered runs to take a 9-6 win. On Sunday, sophomore Mike Jenkins threw 4.2 scoreless innings of relief with just two hits and Levins went 2-for-3, but it wasn't enough in a 5-2 setback.
NEWS, NOTES & MILESTONES
- Senior Connor Hinchliffe recorded his 11th save of the season on Saturday, putting him sixth in the nation. He's now tied for second on the program's single season saves list.
- Ben Faso moved into seventh on the team's career doubles list with 42 and is tied for ninth in career RBI with 119. Faso is also eighth in single season team history with 49 RBIs this year.
- Peyton Sorrels moved into a tie for ninth on the program's single season runs list over the weekend and has scored 46 runs so far this season. Sorrels is also tied for 10th in career triples with eight.
SCOUTING UMBC
- The Retrievers enter the week 20-21 overall and 6-12 in the America East.
- UMBC is 11-13 on the road and has lost four of its last six games after taking 1-of-3 from Stony Brook over the weekend.
- Terrence Pinkston leads the team with a .347 batting average and 42 runs scored. Christian Torres is hitting .320 with 35 RBIs, and as a team UMBC is hitting .263 overall.
- Tanner Esposito is the projected starter for Tuesday's game. He is 2-0 with a 6.04 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 25.1 innings. The Retrievers have a 5.96 team ERA.
SCOUTING LIU BROOKLYN
- The Blackbirds begin the week at 17-23 overall and 8-10 in the Northeast Conference.
- LIU Brooklyn is 11-16 on the road and has lost two in a row after it had previously won three straight games.
- Rob Griswold is tops on the squad with a .299 batting average and 10 doubles. Gregory Vaughn is batting .287 with a .451 slugging percentage. However, the Blackbirds are hitting just .245 as a team.
- LIU Brooklyn has been steady on the mound with a team ERA of 4.63. Griswold (3-4, 2.51 ERA) and Mike Kreiger (2.89 ERA, 6 saves) have anchored the Blackbirds' bullpen.
