Orlowski Pitches Gem as Softball Splits at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – In a doubleheader at Lafayette on Wednesday, the La Salle softball team (7-19) split against the hosting Leopards (4-23-1). Lafayette claimed the first game, 5-1, with the Explorers claiming the night cap, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when senior Emma Schweigert sent a solo shot to right field.
  • Lafayette scored five straight runs with one in the second, two in the third, and two in the fifth.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Freshman Cailey Joyce (3-7) pitched the complete game, picking up the loss. Joyce tossed six innings, allowing six hits and two walks for four earned runs. She struck out four on the day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Schweigert finished the game 2-for-3 with the solo shot.
  • Freshman Audrey LaBouliere also went 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Sophomore Deanna Pineiro was the only other Explorer with a base knock.
GAME NOTES:
  • Schweigert moved into third place in school history with 20 career home runs.
La SALLE 3, LAFAYETTE 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Leopards jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after an RBI groundout.
  • La Salle responded in the third when junior Emily Conaway sent a double to right field, scoring Joyce.
  • Lafayette responded in the bottom half, scoring a run on an RBI single to center.
  • With one away in the seventh and Joyce on first, freshman Mackenzie Vogler launched a two-run homer to center field to push the Explorers in front, 3-2.
  • The Leopards had a chance to answer in the bottom of the seventh, however sophomore Morgan Orlowski set the side down on strikes.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Orlowski (3-8) picked up the victory in the complete game effort. She struck out seven batters to tie her career high. Orlowski allowed two earned runs on seven hits.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Vogler was 1-for-3 with the two-run shot, which was the first of her career.
  • Joyce led the team with a pair of hits in three trips. She also scored two runs.
  • Conaway recorded the Explorers other hit with a double and an RBI.
UP NEXT:
La Salle heads to UMass this weekend to continue Atlantic 10 play. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
