AMHERST, Mass. – The La Salle softball team (7-21, 1-7 A-10) couldn't handle the UMass Minutewomen (17-14, 5-1 A-10) on Saturday, falling in a double header, 8-0 through six innings and 8-4 in game two.
UMASS 8, La SALLE 0 – F/6 INNINGS
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UMass jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI-double from Kaycee Carbone.
- Things remained close through four innings. It wasn't until the home half of the fifth that the Minutewomen jumped out to a big lead, scoring four runs on four hits.
- UMass cemented the mercy rule in the sixth, scoring the final three runs needed on two hits and an error.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (3-10) went 5.2 innings in a complete game effort and allowed six earned runs on nine hits. She walked a pair and struck out one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
UMASS 8, La SALLE 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior Emma Schweigert reached on an error and drove in sophomore Ashley Mendenhall.
- The home team answered in the second inning, tying the game on an RBI single.
- The Explorers had their best inning in the third, plating three runs. With the bases loaded and no outs, Vogler sent a two-run double down the left field line. Joyce was up next and brought in a run on an error by the right fielder.
- UMass responded quickly as it scored four in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead.
- The Minutewomen added one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Joyce (4-9) took the loss after allowing eight earned runs on 13 hits and two walks. The freshman set down four batter on strikes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Joyce paced the Explorers with three hits in four at bats, adding an RBI.
- Freshman Natalie Rios and Schweigert each added two hits, with the rookie scoring twice and the senior recording a double, walk, run, and an RBI.
- Freshmen Kaylee Piven and Vogler each registered a hit.

La Salle and UMass complete the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
