Kelley, Faso Guide Explorers to 9-5 Win over UMBC

PHILADELPHIA – Freshman right-hander Chuck Kelley racked up eight strikeouts and senior Ben Faso had four hits as the La Salle University baseball team defeated UMBC, 9-5, from Hank DeVincent Field on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Faso started things off with a solo home run to right field in the second inning to push the Explorers ahead 1-0.
  • UMBC jumped on top in the third inning with a pair of runs, but the third run was thrown out at the plate to keep the difference at just one.
  • Faso tied the game in the bottom of the third with a single up the middle to score senior Peyton Sorrels. Sophomore Jack Cucinotta then knocked in freshman Tatem Levins on an RBI single to left to give La Salle the edge again.
  • Still in the third, senior Kevin McGowan drove in Faso with another single to right, and junior Ryan Guckin made it four straight RBI singles with a rip to left center to score Cucinotta for a 5-2 lead.
  • Senior Brian Tagoe extended the lead in the fourth with a no-doubt homer to right field, his first of the season. Sophomore Tommy Toal later singled to left to bring home Sorrels and then scored on a double down the left field line by Cucinotta, making it 8-2.
  • Meanwhile, Kelley was dealing on the mound. He struck out the final batter in the fourth swinging to strand two runners and stranded another in the top of the fifth by striking out the final batter looking.
  • La Salle added one more run in the eighth as Sorrels came in on a sacrifice fly by Levins.
  • Ryan Brown hit a solo homer for the Retrievers in the ninth, but sophomore right-hander Malik Brown finished off the victory for the Explorers.
