Late Offense Helps VCU Top Baseball in Series Opener

PHILADELPHIA – Senior Peyton Sorrels hit a leadoff home run to put La Salle ahead in the opening inning, but VCU scored in each of the final four innings to take the opening game of the three-game series at Hank DeVincent Field on Friday, 11-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sorrels led off the bottom of the first inning with his first career homer in a La Salle uniform, a solo shot to left field to give the Explorers an early 1-0 edge.
  • Freshman Aidan Frye put forth a strong effort on the mound as the starter and kept the red-hot Rams off the scoreboard until the sixth inning.
  • VCU evened the score in the sixth, however, on an unearned run, scoring on a single and an error.
  • Frye's day came to a close after that, and VCU took advantage from there. The Rams scored five runs in the seventh, capped off by a Brandon Henson three-run homer, to suddenly take a five-run lead, 6-1.
  • The Rams added three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to extend their advantage to 11-1.
  • Sophomore Jack Cucinotta hit an RBI single to score freshman Nick O'Day in the bottom of the ninth, but that was it for the Explorers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Frye allowed only three hits and one unearned run with a pair of strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.
  • Sorrels went 2-for-4 on the day, as did freshman Tatem Levins.
  • Sophomore Tommy Toal's nine-game hit streak came to an end, but with a walk in the first inning, he has now reached base safely in 17 consecutive games.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers and Rams will continue their series on Saturday with first pitch for game two set for 1 p.m.
