HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Mike Anthony made his final start for the Blue and Gold on the mound and nearly got through the first inning unscathed before a two-out error brought in an unearned run for the Rams.
- Rhode Island added two more on a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0 in the second.
- Despite the three runs, Anthony was dealing on the hill, as the first five batters he retired all came via the strikeout.
- The Rams took advantage of another error in the fourth, plating two more unearned runs to stretch their advantage to 5-0.
- La Salle finally got on the board in the sixth when sophomore Jack Cucinotta singled to left field to bring home senior Kevin McGowan, who scored his 100th career run. Cucinotta and senior Brian Tagoe then pulled off a double steal, forcing an errant throw into the outfield that allowed Cucinotta to cross the plate, making it 5-2.
- The Explorers had a chance with two on and the tying run at the plate in the seventh with no outs, but nothing came of it.
- Senior Connor Hinchliffe entered in the eighth and fired a 1-2-3 inning before the Rams got an unearned run in the ninth to make it 6-2. Hinchliffe finished with three strikeouts over the final two innings.
- Senior Ben Faso hit a two-out single in the ninth, but that was all La Salle could manage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- La Salle finishes the year 25-31 overall, the fourth most wins in team history and the most since 2011 when the Explorers went 28-26.
- Anthony racked up a career-high seven strikeouts over 3.1 innings, scattering two earned runs on five hits. Cucinotta went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, a run and an RBI to lead the offense.
- Hinchliffe finishes tied for the school record with 13 saves and moved into second in single season history with his 28th appearance of the season.
- Faso finishes third in program history with 58 RBIs this season, while he and freshman Tatem Levins end the year tied for seventh in single season doubles with 17. Faso ranks fifth in career doubles (45), sixth in career RBI (128) and ninth in career hits (208).
- Senior Peyton Sorrels swiped his 25th stolen base of the year before exiting with a hamstring injury in the first. That puts him fifth on the program's single season list.
