Pat McCarthy

Men's Soccer | August 29, 2019

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University men's soccer team will begin a new season on Friday when the Explorers welcome Iona to McCarthy Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest.

LOOKING BACK ON 2018
  • The Explorers got off to a hot start last season before cooling off, winning their first two matches of the season and receiving recognition in the national polls.
  • One of those victories came against Iona, a 2-1 win on the road. Senior Pat McCarthy scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner.
  • La Salle carried 15 freshmen last season, while the squad graduated seven seniors and one graduate student.
RETURNING PLAYERS
  • Head coach Rob Irvine returns 16 players from a season ago, 12 of which saw game action.
  • Of those returning, there are four upperclassmen and 12 underclassmen.
  • Pat McCarthy returns for his final season after appearing in all 17 games last year, tallying one goal and an assist while starting 16 times.
  • Goalkeeper Brett Werner was a bright spot as a freshman, earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week and Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week on separate occasions. Werner went 1-1-1 with a 0.91 goals against average and a .857 save percentage over three starts.
  • Sophomore Omari Cotterell also registered a goal and an assist over 14 games, primarily coming off the bench. Classmate Ike Hollinger played every game, making 12 starts and recording a pair of assists.
  • Senior Daniel Begovic and sophomores Charlie Collins, Sam DeCencio and Andrew Weir each appeared in double-digit contests last season as well.
NEWCOMERS JOINING THE SQUAD
  • La Salle added eight newcomers to the roster for the upcoming season.
  • Four of the newcomers are transfers and the other four come from overseas.
  • The group features two goalkeepers, two defenders and four offensive players.
MCCARTHY AND GUTEKUNST NAMED CAPTAINS
  • Seniors Pat McCarthy and Brandon Gutekunst will serve as team captains this season. Both have been on the roster since Irvine took over as head coach in 2016.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
  • Iona finished 10-6-2 overall and 6-3-1 in the MAAC last season.
  • Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Year Mauro Bravo returns after posting four goals and three assists last year. All-MAAC defender Malcolm Moreno is also back for the Gaels.
  • In net, Giuliano Santucci was the team's primary starter and had a 1.12 goals against average to go with a .741 save percentage.
