PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University field hockey team received key contributions all over the field in a gritty 3-2, penalty-shootout victory over LIU on Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. Senior
Amanda Chapin recorded the lone goal in the shootout while freshman
Chloe South was outstanding in goal for the Explorers (3-2), who won their second straight game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Samie Hackman opened the scoring in the 11th minute, tallying the first goal of her collegiate career off a pass from Chapin to give La Salle a 1-0 lead.
- The Sharks (0-4)Â responded with the equalizer in the 22nd minute, when Emma Braekmans scored her first goal this season.
- A bevy of action started the third quarter, as La Salle's Lauren Lechleitner found the back of the cage for the third time in 2019 to put the Explorers on top once again.
- The lead was short-lived, however, as Sammy Bell delivered another game-tying goal for the Sharks just 1:06 after La Salle's goal.
- The remainder of regulation and overtime went scoreless, with the Explorers accumulating 13 of their 20 shots during the fourth period and overtime.
- In the second overtime, La Salle was on the doorstep numerous times and had four penalty corners over the 10 minutes but could not convert.
- With the score still knotted after 80 minutes of action, the penalty shootout began with South and LIU goalie Rachel Vellis preventing the first two rounds of shooters from scoring.
- In the third round, Chapin finally broke through with a pretty finish around Vellis to put La Salle up, 1-0.
- From there, it was South that took care of business as she denied the remaining three LIU attackers to secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- La Salle had a decisive 20-9 penalty corner advantage over the Sharks, with 19 of the 20 coming after halftime.
- The overall shot lead was a much smaller one, 20-18, but the Explorers outshoot LIU, 18-13, over the final 50 minutes of game action.
- Freshman Noralie Pareau Dumont had seven of those shots, including four on frame.
- South finished with seven saves after entering in relief for the starter Cassie Kincaid in the second half.
UP NEXT
- La Salle will play its next four games on the road, beginning with a matchup against Towson on Friday, Sept. 20. The contest is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.Â
