Late Rally Falls Short as Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss to Rider, 2-1

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Despite a late rally that forced overtime, the La Salle University field hockey team suffered a 2-1 road defeat at the hands of Rider on Friday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field. Senior Amanda Chapin scored her first goal of the season with less than two minutes remaining on a penalty stroke that forced extra time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first period, the home team jumped in front early in the second as Kiki van Ommeren scored from right in front of net.
  • Playing in unfavorably wet conditions, the Explorers battled throughout the rest of the first half and into the third quarter but were unable to break through.
  • In the 34th minute, freshman Noralie Pareau Dumont had a chance off a penalty corner saved by the Rider goalkeeper Lena Vandam.
  • With time running down in the fourth, senior Lauren Lechleitner intercepted a pass deep in the attacking third of the field and was fouled while going to goal.
  • A penalty stroke was awarded to Chapin, who calmly stepped to the ball and rifled a shot to the lower-left corner of goal to tie the score in the 68th minute.
  • The game moved to a first overtime period, with La Salle dominating possession and earning a number of prime chances.
  • Chapin had a shot on net saved by a defensive player, and another shot from the senior midfielder was stopped by Vandam.
  • The missed opportunities cost the Explorers in the end, as Rider (1-1) took advantage of a penalty corner in the second overtime and scored the golden tally in the 72nd minute.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers (1-2) will look to snap their two-game skid on Sunday, Sept. 8 against Wagner.
  • The contest will stream live on NEC Front Row, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
