RICHMOND, Va. – After being down by as many as 14 points, the La Salle women's basketball team (7-12, 1-5 A-10) pulled within one with 19 seconds remaining but could not complete the fourth quarter comeback, falling to Richmond (8-11, 2-4 A-10), 63-61. With her first block in the game, senior
Shalina Miller broke the all-time program block record set by Amy Griffin in 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle held an 11-8 lead heading into the first break at 4:02. The Explorers scored nine points off the long ball with one each from junior Kate Hill, sophomore Kayla Spruill, and graduate student Carley Lytton. Richmond scored the first three points after the stoppage from the free throw line before La Salle closed the period on an 8-0 run for a 21-11 lead.
- The Spiders answered in the second quarter, dropping a 25-11 differential on the Explorers to take a 36-32 lead into the half.
- The first 5:03 was a back-and-forth affair with Richmond holding a slight 8-6 advantage at the media stoppage. The Spiders maintained their pressure as they outscored the Explorers 12-7 to close the stanza on top.
- La Salle owned the final period, but a 16-7 margin wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. La Salle had an inbound opportunity under its own basket with four second remaining in the game, but the shot went wide. The Explorers held Richmond 2-of-13 in the quarter. Offensively, junior Deja King recorded seven of the team's 16 points.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Spruill led all players with 18 points and nine rebounds, nearing her second double-double this season. The Baltimore, Md. Native went 4-of-6 from the floor, 2-for-3 from deep, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
- Hill tied her career high set against St. Bonaventure with nine points.
- King also scored nine points, with seven coming in the final frame.
- Miller finished with eight rebounds and two blocks.
- Rookie Jordon Lewis registered a team high four assists in the game.
- La Salle went 16-of-18 from the free throw line.
GAME NOTES:
- Atfter her 18-point performance, Spruill has now scored in double figures in seven straight games and 11 of 19 this season.
- Richmond's 11 points in the first frame is tied for the least amount allowed to open a game this season.
