AMHERST, Mass. - The La Salle University men's basketball team suffered a 77-69 road setback at the hands of Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 action on Wednesday night. Senior
Isiah Deas scored 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Explorers, who fell to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- La Salle shot an even 50.0 percent in the first half and was led by senior Isiah Deas, who had 12 points on an efficient 4-of-6 from the floor.
- The opening 20 minutes featured six ties and 11 lead changes, and neither team was able to gain more than a two-possession advantage.
- A tough driving layup by Deas with 3:57 remaining in the first half tied the game at 32-32.
- The game remained tied into the final minute until consecutive three-pointers by UMass guard Carl Pierre gave the Minutemen a six-point lead heading into halftime.
- Pierre totaled 16 first-half points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor and 4-of-4 from three-point range.
- Five straight for the Explorers, including a three-pointer by senior Saul Phiri, cut the margin to one less than a minute into the second stanza.
- The Minutemen responded with an 11-1 run over a span of 3:16 to pull ahead, 52-41. Pierre finished the spurt with a three-pointer, his final field goal of the game.
- La Salle continued to battle back throughout the second half but couldn't quite get over the hump.
- A three-pointer from Deas with 4:37 to go brought the Explorers to within three at 67-64, but that is as close as it would get down the stretch with UMass holding the visitors at bay.
