WASHINGTON, D.C. – With 12 three-pointers and a 42.9% shooting effort, the La Salle women's basketball team (10-14, 4-7 A-10) defeated George Washington (10-14, 4-7 A-10), 61-54, on Wednesday night in the nation's capital. The win eclipses the programs three league victories from a season ago and snaps a six game losing streak to the Colonials.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle jumped out to a lead from the first basket and held a 12-8 margin through the first 5:26 of the game. All 12 points came from the long ball with the visitors 4-of-5 from three-point land. The Blue & Gold ended the period with a double-digit lead at 20-10. Freshman Amy Jacobs led all scorers with six points. La Salle scored 18 of its 20 points from the long ball, going 6-of-10.
- GW chipped away at the deficit as it outscored the Blue & Gold 6-4 over the first 5:48 of the second frame. The Colonials scored six unanswered to conclude the half down by two. La Salle led, 24-22.
- The Colonials controlled the first portion of the third stanza before La Salle took a 9-0 run over a 2:54 span to knot things at 31. The final 1:32 of the period ended with a 6-2 Explorers' advantage with a pair of threes from sophomore Kayla Spruill to give La Salle a 44-40 lead heading into the fourth.
- La Salle continued to pull away in the final period, scoring 10 of the first 15 points for a 54-45 lead at the media stoppage at 5:13. GW tried to battle back with a 9-7 margin through the remainder of the game, but was too late.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Rookie Claire Jacobs scored a game high 16 points, with 15 coming in the second half. The Perth, Australia native shot 4-of-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the stripe. She added a team high five rebounds.
- Spruill finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown. Big Smooth also corralled five boards.
- A. Jacobs rounded out the trio of double-digit point scorers with an even 10. She had a career high two blocks and tied her best with five rebounds.
GAME NOTES:
- La Salle's last win over GW came on the road, 77-68, on Jan. 25, 2014.
- The Blue & Gold is now 8-4 when scoring first and 7-1 when leading at the half.
- C. Jacobs has scored 10 or more points in five straight games and seven of her last eight. She's eclipsed the 10 points plateau 15 times this season and 15 point mark in 11 games.
