Comeback Attempt Falls Short for Baseball in Series Finale at Furman, 6-5

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The La Salle University baseball team fought back late but came up just short in its series finale at Furman on Sunday, 6-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Manny Corporan struck out three batters over the first two innings and neither side got the offense going until the third inning.
  • In the third, Furman surged ahead with three runs on three hits before the Explorers ended the inning with a double play.
  • La Salle got on the board in the fifth inning as sophomore Ross Mulhall scored on an RBI groundout by classmate Tatem Levins.
  • The Explorers came within a run in the seventh inning, with Levins driving in another run on a sacrifice fly to left, scoring freshman David Smith to make it 3-2.
  • After Corporan's day was done, the Paladins took advantage in the bottom of the seventh, drawing four walks and capitalizing with three runs despite only one hit in the inning.
  • La Salle fought back in the eighth though with three runs to come back within a run. Junior Jack Cucinotta scored on a single by Smith and freshman Aiden Davis-Diaz crossed the plate on a throwing error on the play. Mulhall then scored on an RBI groundout by junior Alfonse Sadallah to make it 6-5 Furman.
  • Junior James Kelly struck out three over two strong innings of relief to give the Explorers a chance down the stretch, but La Salle couldn't get anything going in the ninth.
