Mendenhall, Newcomers Show Positive Signs on First Day of 2020 Season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Day one of the 2020 season showed that the future is bright for the La Salle softball program (0-2), despite falling to Maine (1-0), 4-2, and Tennessee Tech (7-4), 16-6. On the day, six of the team's eight hits came from rookies.

Maine 4, La Salle 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Explorers had the early advantage over the Black Bears. Things were scoreless through the first two frames before junior Ashley Mendenhall sparked the Blue & Gold with a two-run double down the left field line.
  • It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that Maine responded with a four run output on three hits and a walk.
AT THE PLATE:
  • Freshman Lex Ortman had an impressive 3-for-4 day at the plate with a stolen base.
  • Mendenhall finished the game 1-for-3 with the double and two RBIs.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Sophomore transfer Kelly Toomey (0-1) looked great in her Explorer debut. Through the first five innings, Toomey fanned a career best seven opponents and allowed just one hit.
  • All four runs for the Black Bears counted as earned runs for the Cedar Grove, N.J. native. Maine finished with four hits against Toomey.

Tennessee Tech 16, La Salle 6

  • Unlike game one, number two started quickly with the Golden Eagles up 4-0 with a four-run seocnd inning. Tennessee Tech scored on three hits, a hit batter, a walk, and an error.
  • The Golden Eagles opened the game in the third stanza with a 12 run effort on six hits, five errors, and a walk.
  • With their last chance in the fifth inning, the Explorers found the scoreboard with six touching the plate. Rookie Maddy Little reached on an error to allow classmates Victoria Zatko and Mia Recenello to score. Two batters later, freshman Casey Walker went yard for her first career hit. Walker's three-run jack cleared the fence in center with Little and sophomore Audrey LaBouliere on base.
AT THE PLATE:
  • Recenello recorded a pair of hits in two trips off the bench. Her first career knock was a triple to right field. She followed that up later in the same inning with an RBI-single up the middle.
