PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team (12-16, 6-9 A-10) dropped Wednesday's annual Kids Day Game to Davidson (15-13, 8-7 A-10), 70-61, in overtime. The Explorers held a lead in the final minutes, but a late surge was too much for the home squad.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Davidson jumped out to a 12-7 lead after the first 5:29 of the game before the Explorers went on a 14-2 run to end the period on top, 21-14. La Salle shot 47.4% in the period on 9-of-19 shooting. Six different players recorded a point in the quarter, led by the Jacobs twins and junior Deja King with five apiece.
- The Wildcats responded to regain the lead after a 10-2 spurt to begin the second stanza. Again, the Blue & Gold answered with a 9-2 advantage over the final 5:36 of the half to go ahead, 32-26. Four different Explorers contributed to the run, with five total scoring in the period.
- La Salle cushioned its lead to nine points after three quarters of play. Sophomore Kayla Spruill registered seven points in the period on a pair of triples and a free throw.
- Davidson mounted its comeback in the fourth with an 18-9 scoring differential to force an extra period. With 2:33, the home team had a 55-51 lead before the visitors took seven of the final 10 points.
- La Salle scored the opening bucket to start overtime, but that was it. The Wildcats finished with 12 unanswered points to claim the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Eight of the nine Explorers to enter the game recorded a point.
- Rookie Claire Jacobs paced La Salle with 18 points.
- Spruill finished with a double-double on 11 points and 11 boards. She added three assists, two steals and a block to her totals.
- Senior Shalina Miller concluded her career in Tom Gola Arena with six points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks.
