Second Half Surge Powers Women’s Basketball Past GW for Fourth Win in Last Five Games

PHILADELPHIA – A dominant second half powered the La Salle women's basketball team (7-7, 3-4 A-10) past George Washington (4-8, 1-5 A-10) Friday night, 60-45. The Explorers have now claimed four of their last five games.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • GW scored the first bucket of the game, followed by a 5-0 La Salle spurt. The Colonials then claimed a 5-0 run of their own to go up 8-5 at the media stoppage with 4:54 left in the first. The visitors held the lead after one period of play, 13-8.
  • La Salle opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run over 2:42 to tie the game at 15 apiece. GW scored the next four to hold a 19-15 lead at the break with 4:41 remaining. The Blue & Gold jumped out in front with a 7-2 margin through the rest of the half. Junior Kayla Spruill had 10 points at the half.
  • George Washington claimed the first four points of the third stanza before the home team took a 10-7 run to a media stoppage at 2:31 with the game tied at 32. Junior Molly Masciantonio registered eight of La Salle's points in the quarter up to that point. The Explorers took five of the next seven points for a 37-34 lead.
  • La Salle dominated the final period with 24 points in the final 6:29 seconds to pull away from the Colonials. Spruill recorded 13 points in the final frame.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • La Salle's defense buckled down giving up a season best 45 points.
  • The Blue & Gold shot a season high 40.7% from deep as it connected on 11-of-27.
  • Overall, the Explorers went 21-of-59 (35.6%) from the field and 7-of-10 (70.0%) from the line.
  • La Salle won the turnover margin 12-20, but were outrebounded 42-35.
  • Spruill led all players with 23 points on 8-of-16 and 3-of-5 from deep.
  • Masciantonio and sophomore Claire Jacobs added 11 points apiece.
  • Jacobs registered a team high seven rebounds and four steals.
  • Sophomore Amy Jacobs grabbed a career best six boards.
GAME NOTES:
  • The victory is the first over GW at home since Jan. 29, 2011.
  • La Salle moves to 5-1 when leading at the half this season.
  • Spruill has scored 16+ in her last three games, and 20+ in back-to-back.
